Q 1. Why is Mathematics important?

Ans. Mathematics is about pattern and structure; it is about logical analysis, deduction, calculation within these patterns and structures. When patterns are found, often in widely different areas of science and technology, the mathematics of these patterns can be used to explain and control natural happenings and situations. Mathematics has a pervasive influence on our everyday lives, and contributes to the wealth of the country.

The study of mathematics can satisfy a wide range of interests and abilities. It develops the imagination. It trains in clear and logical thought. It is a challenge, with varieties of difficult ideas and unsolved problems, because it deals with the questions arising from complicated structures. Yet it also has a continuing drive to simplification, to finding the right concepts and methods to make difficult things easy, to explaining why a situation must be as it is. In so doing, it develops a range of language and insights, which may then be applied to make a crucial contribution to our understanding and appreciation of the world, and our ability to find and make our way in it.

Q 2. Mathematics as a career?

Ans.Those who qualify in mathematics are in the fortunate position of having a wide range of career choices. The abilities to use logical thought, to formulate a problem in a way which allows for computation and decision, to make deductions from assumption, to use advanced concepts,
are all enhanced by a mathematics degree course. It is for this reason that mathematician are increasingly in demand. With a mathematics degree, you should be able to turn your hand to finance, statistics, engineering, computers, teaching or accountancy with a success not possible to other graduates. This flexibility is even more important nowadays, with the considerable uncertainty as to which areas will be the best for employment in future years.

[The most recent surveys show graduates in mathematicians and computer science at the top of the earning lists six years after graduation.]

Computer science has a considerable mathematical component, which is becoming more important as the designers of software are required to prove that the software meets its specification. This kind of rigor is one of the basic techniques of mathematics, and can be learned only through a mathematics course

Q 3. Can Mathematics skills be upgraded dramatically?

Ans. Level of Mathematical skills depends upon understanding of fundamentals and rigorous practice. Availability of experienced and knowledgeable guide/tutor goes a long way in stimulating interests of student in exploring and practicing math’s skills. If such guidance is supplemented with innovative learning material which challenges intellect of students, maths skills can be dramatically improved.

Q 4. How IT technology will help my child climb the learning curve?

Ans. ICT plays an important role in education as it plays in any other area of life. ICT enables bringing vast talent of knowledge on a single platform and creating an opportunities to learn for students, which is seemingly impossible in world limited by constraints of time and travel.

Technology also helps students to revisit learning experience as per their convinience.ICT also helps students to form peer communities to derive more learning and setting benchmarking by such interaction

Technology related learning material adds valuable dimension to learning by creating real life environment to understand complex concepts and help in their application.

Q 6. How will the tutoring benefit children?

Ans. The tutoring service is intended to supplement (not substitute) classroom learning. It will considerably improve the knowledge level (in math/reading) of any participating student. An average learner will be elevated to an excellent level, a below average learner will be brought up to an average level, and an excellent learner will be challenged to higher levels of excellence and outstanding performance.

Q 7. How do you intend to do this?

Ans. A child’s areas of strengths and weaknesses will be assessed by conducting an initial test and subsequent periodic tests. Based on the evaluation results, the student coach will put together a personalized curriculum that is tailor-made to strengthen the areas that need improvement. The expectations of a grade level will be set based on the recommended standards in various states (like the California Standards Syllabus for the State of California).

Q 12. What is expected from parents?

Ans. Parents are expected to provide a distraction-free environment for their children. They will receive email reminders for their children’s schedule one day in advance, in addition to the schedule information given at the time of enrollment. Parents must know their children’s schedule, and ensure that they log on to the Growing Stars web site 5 to 10 minutes in advance, and wait for the teacher to join the session. The teacher also will log on at the scheduled time, and will automatically be connected to the child at the start time.

Q 13. How is the progress of a child measured?

Ans. Based on the results of the initial assessment test, an initial status report of the child will be prepared. His/her knowledge in various skills for the enrolled subject, say Math, for the grade level will be assessed and represented in a graphical form. The graph is generated based on the number of correct/wrong answers in the initial test. Progress will be measured based on the performance in subsequent tests for the respective skills.
